XTC:Dear God Lyrics

I’m one of those that cannot understand why the world doesn’t worship at the band’s feet. I do realise that a review of Skylarking will largely be preaching to the converted, but I will go through the motions of putting some songs up from youtube not from this remaster in the hope that more are converted. Firstly, despite the majority disagreeing, Skylarking isn’t my favourite XTC album. It’s not that it isn’t superb, it is, but to these ears it’s behind Oranges And Lemons and Black Sea.

I was a tween during this era and this music very much made me who I am. The song is ironic, in that British Steel ultimately laid thousands of employees off because the Conservatives the British version of the U. Republican Party got it all horribly wrong. There was much unemployment the source of the Sex Pistols angst towards Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth and getting a job in the mining, steel, or automotive industry was supposed to be the panacea.

Of course, those industries are all but dead now in Britain. Flag sugarfish on July 10, 0 Flag freedomBono on January 06, 0 doodleboy I think Nigel symbolizes ‘Joe Six Pack’ and my gut feeling is that the original lyrics were “He has his future in a British still” I think the song is a social commentary on the evil social engineering undertaken to dumb down the average working Joe, lower his expectations, and make him numb to his own suffering and misery. Hence, he is easily pacified via all the food additives and other poisons like alcohol and adulterated water and vaccines etc.

At a guess the real meaning of the song has been concealed, and the real lyrics concealed, because these guys were co-opted by the system. Nigel has his whole future awaiting him in alcoholism and poverty, and he will even be happy with it , because that is all that he can expect in today’s world. He’ll shut up and stay in his place, ‘his world’;, if he knows what’s best for him.

Edit XTC’s unique, yet intensely popular, sound garnered massive critical acclaim from the music press, with reviewers proclaiming them the most “clever”,”quirky”, and “hyperactive” band in existence — adjectives that quite naturally translated into immediate and enormous international record sales. Their first single, “This Is Mom,” made them instant millionaires. Scoring number-one smash hit after number-one smash hit, the group toured constantly, playing to crowds so large that by stadiums could no longer hold them, forcing the band to play in Wal-Mart stores and Oprah Winfrey ‘s bathroom.

The Price of Stardom Edit Angered over attacks by giant mutant insects at concert venues, XTC singer Andy Pandy refused to tour after Citing artistic differences during the recording of their second album, Grue Toe, keyboardist Antshoes was replaced by a second guitarist, “Super” Dave Osborne. Despite the significant change in the band’s sound, sales continued to climb.

Their third album, Checks and Wire Transfers, was a conceptual work dealing with the problem of how to keep track of the constant influx of royalty payments and concert fees. Their fourth, Cash Sea, described their 5, square-foot private bank vault, while their fifth, ‘s English Legal Settlement, commemorated their successful effort to buy roughly 45 percent of the British Isles as a tax shelter after firing their manager.

It was also around this time that XTC stopped touring, mostly due to Pandy’s aversion to giant man-eating insects. Now a drummerless, Steelerless trio, XTC’s music grew more experimental and introspective; ‘s Bummer was their least successful album, with only 18 million copies sold and just four number-one singles. The Big Penis, released in , fared little better. This led Sexually-Experienced to question their commitment to the group, and after protracted negotiations, it was decided that XTC should become a southern boogie band as soon as they could grow a sufficient amount of hair in their armpits.

The resulting album, ‘s Loansharking, was an artistic disappointment, despite yielding the group’s most successful song to date, “Dear Wad of Cash. Despite the immediate and near-catastrophic effect on the label’s bottom line, Sexually-Experienced chairman Enrichered Bran-Flakeson refused to budge, stating that “if this were some alternate universe, XTC wouldn’t even own 10 percent of the UK, much less half.

Hell, they could be completely broke by now.

Andy Partridge comic book. Released in , it took the group’s music away from the more performance-friendly new wave rock of their earlier years in favour of a consciously pastoral direction and songtitles such as “Love on a Farmboy’s Wages”. Terry Chambers left the band during the Mummer sessions his last recording was on the track “Toys”. Chambers had always preferred touring over working in the confines of a studio, and was uncomfortable with the band’s desire to experiment with new rhythmic possibilities such as drum machines and found percussion.

He has since withdrawn from the music industry. XTC’s next album, ‘s The Big Express marked a return to the harsher and more abrasive sounds of their early albums, but the combination of the group’s ‘no touring’ status and the growing disenchantment of their label made it their poorest selling LP to date. Later in , the members of XTC created their alter-ego, ” The Dukes of Stratosphear ” a suggested band name that the group had considered when they first formed.

With this project, they reunited with original producer John Leckie to record a series of affectionate parodies that indulged their love of classic s psychedelic music. In the band were the subject of the documentary Play at Home for Channel 4. Filmed in July and broadcast on 16 October , the programme documented the band in their native town of Swindon and included a live acoustic version of “Train Running Low on Soul Coal”, as well as six promotional video clips: Although the pairing of XTC and Rundgren was highly anticipated by fans, the sessions were less than enjoyable for the band.

Rundgren had been hired to trim the band’s studio excesses and return them to commercial success. Prior to the recording sessions, Rundgren listened through demos of the songs, chose 15 for the record and worked out a sequence for the album. Being accustomed to creative independence in the studio, Partridge resisted Rundgren’s decision-making role as producer.

Since getting married is a powerful force in human life, and since a wedding is one of the most grandiose events many people put together in their lives, it shouldn’t be surprising that it is also a powerful force in fiction as well. All its trappings are familiar to us: Whether or not the lovebirds stick to these traditions or eschew them for their own vision can be the story in and of itself.

A song-by-song look at the entire XTC catalog, as well as a band history, all told with the band’s input, I’d probably read it a half dozen times since I bought it in ’98 and when I wrote my review , I was very complimentary in my assessment. However, an interesting thing happened when I tweeted out a link to my review

There is no language in our lungs To tell the world just how we feel No bridge of thought No mental link No letting out just what you think As I was walking down to my local supermarket this afternoon, I was playing this song in my head, mouthing the lyrics silently, smiling to myself as I realized that I could still see my breath in the cold December air.

But that has been changing in recent years, and as usual the internet is often my companion when I listen to music at home. This has given me a completely new appreciation for those brilliant songwriters, and also gives me a lot of inspiration for many of the ramblings that I publish here, as I often start with a favourite song title, and end up writing about the same subject as the original composer.

It is not because the music of The Clash, XTC, The Jam, Otway and The Wedding Present is better than say The Stranglers, The Cure, The Levellers, or The Wonder Stuff, it is because they have not only written some of the greatest music of the last 40 years, but they have also accompanied it with lyrics that so often are thought provoking, and in some cases up there with some of the great poets. I have always been a shy person; painfully in childhood, a constant struggle in my teens and twenties, constrained by fear through my thirties and forties, and a quiet introverted self-awareness in my fifties.

And I know that I am not alone, because I watch those dating shows when my fellow sufferers are crippled by fear and unable to communicate. This was not always the case and I have often had my shyness mistaken for arrogance, as I was learning how to hide my introvert nature and put on a front. I am arrogant in many ways, but not with attractive women!
